Renewable Energy and the Ground Source Heat Pump

Geothermal energy is heat energy that is stored on Earth. This renewable energy can be used for some purposes, such as the production of heating and domestic hot water, air and others, and all this through the ground source heat pump.

In Portugal, for example, there are some privileged areas for the use of this energy source, such as the archipelagos, Algarve, among others, as they are areas where the earth’s crust is thinner or close to places where geological accidents occur, such as faults.

Geothermal is pure solar energy stored in the ground. When the sun starts to shine brighter in spring, energy is stored, little by little, under the surface of the ground. The hotter it gets, the lower it is stored. By autumn, enough energy from our biggest heat source, the sun, will have been stored to heat your home through a cold, freezing winter.

So, even during a summer with mild temperatures, enough heat energy will be stored in the ground below your house to ensure that you always enjoy a warm winter indoors.

Using a liquid-filled circuit, also known as a collector, you can collect solar heat that is stored deep in the earth, at the bottom of the pond, or a few feet under the garden. In other words, you don’t need to have a mountain on your property to install a home heat pump. The type of heat source that suits your needs will depend on your home’s energy requirements, your heating system and the nature of your home.

The heat pump concentrates the stored energy and heats the water to heat your home and baths. The liquid in the circuit circulates and is heated by heat stored deep in the ground or in the lake. When the liquid passes through the heat pump, it encounters another closed system. Refrigerant turns into gas at very low temperatures.

So we can conclude that A heat pump only needs a heat source (outside air), two heat exchangers (one to absorb and one to release the heat) and a relatively small amount of motive energy to keep the system going, this will make a simple system supply energy in a renewable way.
